Review of Mamar Kassey
This very exciting group from Niger was featured at the 2002 Lotus World Music festival in Bloomington, Indiana. The first thing you learn upon hearing this group live is that they come from Niger (pronounced nee-JAIR), which is a totally different country from Nigeria. The second thing you learn is that these musicians are HOT!! They had the crowd dancing for 3 hours straight. It's a great combination of electric guitar, traditional flute, vocals, and a unique style of drum made from an upturned gourd bowl, struck with finger rings. Listen closely and you'll hear it on this recording. The band is backed up by three lovely vocalists who also do traditional dance to the music. This is a wonderful CD - but see the group live if you can!!
